Some information about the power outages in Copperfield:

www.facebook.com/Spencerfor12/posts/779240370980968Since 2020, residents in the communities of New Brighton and Copperfield have experienced a total of eight unplanned power outages. The leading cause of these outages was underground cable faults.

In response to this, ENMAX Power implemented additional technology along the underground cable, which included the installation of ‘smart’ Fault Circuit Indicators (FCIs), which are intended to provide visibility to operators of fault locations and to improve restoration times. Further, ENMAX Power installed Distribution Automation (DA) switches, which are intended to automatically detect and isolate cable faults and rapidly restore power to as many impacted customers as possible.

In July 2022, ENMAX Power undertook a Cable Replacement Project, which included replacing a section of the underground electrical cable that supplies power to the communities of New Brighton and Copperfield. This project intended to repair the faulted cable sections to restore power and mitigate future outages. Following the completion of this project residents of Copperfield and New Brighton have experienced three additional unplanned power outages, one of which was caused by
wildlife interference.

In October 2023, ENMAX Power completed additional testing of cable segments adjacent to the location of the July 2022 Cable Replacement Project. Most recently on April 26, 2024, an unrelated cable fault occurred on a different section of underground infrastructure, impacting approximately 2,500 customers. In the wake of this unplanned event, Ward 12 constituents have voiced their concerns, seeking improved reliability. ENMAX Power has since initiated and expedited a Cable Replacement Project that is set to commence following the 2024 Calgary Stampede in the communities of New Brighton and Copperfield.
